Abstract

In the last decade of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, the arrival of foreign populations in a limited space and time also meant an increase in the number of people visiting medical centers. This caused some changes to be carried out and solutions to some new difficulties to be sought. Linguistic and cultural differences are one of the main difficulties faced by immigrants. This is where the figure of the interpreter appears, who intervenes so that the communication can take place. Spain is home to a large number of immigrants, half of whom are women, who arrive in the company of their partners in most cases. Many of them suffered abuse and because they did not speak the language of the country, it was difficult for them to seek help. To help these women, interpreters in public services are essential. The problem is that the sector is not sufficiently regulated in Spain, and in most cases women go with friends or family who are bilingual. However, they are not trained to carry out this work, which means that women do not receive help in most cases. Therefore, in this paper we aim to clearly define what the specialisation needs are for an interpreter to be able to adequately perform their professional work in assisting victims of GBV and to provide a glossary as a resource to help.
