Public Service Interpreting and Translation (PSIT) and Languages of Lesser Diffusion (LLD) across Europe: New challenges in Practice and Education
(ed. Carmen Valero-Garcés & Soňa Hodáková)
Various recent crisis events have caused a huge increase in migrants and applicants for asylum or temporary shelter in Europe. This is linked to the demand for language mediation, with a specific focus on communication in languages of lesser diffusion. Recognising that translation and interpreting are crucial in ensuring social inclusion and accessibility of services, The DGT European Masters' in Translation working group on PSIT and Training in Languages of Lesser Diffusion was established to contribute to one of the European Commission's priority lines: the efficient management of migration and asylum seekers and refugees (European Commission, 2024).
As the situation in the field of public service translation and interpreting, whether in practice, education, research or professionalisation in this area, varies from one European country to another, the PSIT and LLD Working Group serves primarily to map the situation across Europe and to exchange experiences and examples of good practice. The aim of this issue of the international scientific journal Fitispos is to present research results on the practical implementation of public service translation and interpreting, project and training activities and other inspiring initiatives in the various countries and regions of Europe represented in PSIT and LLD Working Group. The entire issue will thus offer an opportunity to compare the situation in countries with a longer tradition of migrant admission, practice and training in PSIT and LLD with the reality in countries where only recent events have called for a rapid response in this area.
The editors welcome original contributions representing the perspectives of different countries of up to 7,000 words in English or Spanish, prepared according to the guidelines available at https://fitisposij.web.uah.es/OJS/index.php/fitispos/about/submissions.
