Artificial Intelligence in the field of Public Service Translation and Interpreting: research and opportunities (Guest editors Dra. Encarnación Postigo Pinazo, University of Malaga & Dra. Laura Parrilla Gómez, University Pablo de Olavide)

The great advances achieved in recent years in artificial intelligence (AI) have made it possible to respond to the great challenges that have been posed in the field of education, especially in the field of Translation and Interpreting. In the realm of Public Services Interpreting and Translation, the past decade has seen a growing use of innovative applications and digital tools, enabling access to training resources and fostering the development of essential skills that must be reinforced during the training stages of aspiring interpreters. However, the full potential of these AI-driven tools for the field of Translation and Interpreting, particularly within the public services sector, remains to be fully explored.

The aim of this issue of the international scientific journal FITISPos is to present research results on the use of AI tools both in the professional stages and in the training context of the Public Service context, sharing innovative practices and ideas that could be considered in the training of future professionals.

The editors welcome original contributions for the field of Public Service Interpreting of up to 7,000 words in English or Spanish, prepared according to the guidelines available at https://fitisposij.web.uah.es/OJS/index.php/fitispos/about/submissions.

Within the broad spectrum of IA topics, the issue will preferably cover the following topics:

· Modern speech-to-speech translation and interpretation technologies, along with the difficulties they present.

· Managing interpreters’ stress with AI tools.

· AI-enabled speech recognition and the significance of comprehending what is being said.

· Considering the moral dilemmas presented by AI applications for the use of AI in the provision of interpreting services and its effects on the interpreting market.

· Exploring the current state of AI in the language industry.

· Cultural issues and AI interpreting tools.

· The Role of Translators and Interpreters in AI-driven public sector

· The Translator and Interpreter as an Ethical Gatekeeper: Managing bias in AI-powered public sector.

· From Civil Servants to Cyborgs? Rethinking the translator’s and interpreter’s role in AI-augmented public-sector communication

· A Double-Edged Sword: The Impact of AI Translation on minority languages in the public sector.

· Training the Next Generation: Adapting Translation and Interpreting curricula for the AI-driven public sector.

· The Future of Public Service Interpreting: Exploring the potential and challenges of AI-powered interpreting solutions.

· Language Policy and AI: Implications for linguistic diversity and citizen access in the public sphere.

· Human oversight and Quality Assurance in AI-driven translation and interpreting for Public Services.

· Deadline for submissions: 30 September 2025

· Decision: November-December 2025

· Publishing: April 2026
